Middletons hosts the Confederation of Indian Industry's Building Business
through Sport
Today Middletons will host the Confederation of Indian Industry's Building Business through Sport organised by the
Australian Industry Group, Australia India Business Council, City of Melbourne, and the Department of Innovation,
Industry and Regional Development.
In attendance will be some of India's key business leaders who will meet to network and share ideas in and around
doing business through sport.  The focus on sport will be underlined by the arrival of the Queen's Baton of the
Commonwealth Games which is travelling through parts of Australia with several of the delegates who are attending
today's meeting.
Middletons has long been synonymous with doing business with India and represents both Indian and Australian
businesses in dealing with each other and the regulatory regimes of each others country. Head of Middletons' India
group, Cameron Abbott said "It is not often that someone coming to a business networking meeting can bring the
Queen's Baton with them and I know all attendees will be delighted to see this tangible symbol of our common
history."
Further Mr Abbott said "Middletons understands that sport is big business in both countries and we realise that sport
sometimes presents unique legal challenges, often in the context of public scrutiny that characterises all facets of
professional sport. Such challenges require legal advisers with expertise, an intimate knowledge of evolving sports
law issues and an ability to focus on the real problem at the heart of a deal or dispute. Middletons took the time to
understand Indian laws and customs and how they applied to Australian business, and now we map that over a whole
raft of activity, not just sport. "
Mr Abbott said, "...and its not just the business end of sport, both Australians and Indians love their sport including
cricket and the Commonwealth Games and many a business deal has no doubt been struck while watching their
beloved side win or lose."
Mr Abbott went on to say, "we advise Indian businesses on how to do business in Australia and we have Australian
clients with joint ventures, manufacturing and outsourcing agreements in India. We encourage our local clients to look
to India when investing or off-shoring work in India because of the similarities of our laws and that fact that India
recognises copyright and trade marks - not a luxury available in many countries with a low cost manufacturing base."
As a National Gold sponsor and member of the Australia-India Business Council, Middletons is committed to
strengthening business relationships between India and Australia.
Mr Abbott finally said "in addition to our India expertise, Middletons Sports Law team acts for some of Australias
largest sporting organisations. Middletons is the official legal services provider for the Australian Open tennis
tournament and the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships. Middletons' clients also include the Australian
Football League (AFL) and the Carlton Football Club."
