Live cinema broadcasts to aid regional small

businesses as they face tough times

David Koch and his Business Builders to present live at

regional cinemas

‘Making Money Work’ small business workshop

October 22, 2010 The lot of a regional small business is never easy, and spiraling energy

costs, interest rates rises and an ATO crackdown on SME tax debts are making for a tough

economic start to the 2010/2011 financial year.

David Koch, head of Kochie’s Business Builders and Sunrise host, said that the fragile state

of many small businesses’ cash flows, especially in regional areas, was a cause for concern.

“The compound effect of six interest rate rises, higher rents and utility costs is putting

pressure on many small businesses, compromising their growth,” he said. “Without the

access to training and advice that their city counterparts enjoy, regional businesses are

particularly disadvantaged.”

To help regional small businesses, Koch and the team from Kochie’s Business Builders

(KBB) will undertake a series of educational workshops broadcast live via satellite to cinema

complexes across regional and rural Australia. Audience members will be able to participate

live via SMS.

“Business owners need the right assistance and advice to sure-up their operations and make

the most of their opportunities for growth. However, regional business owners can rarely

justify the expense of traveling to major cities to attend a one off event, so instead of them

coming to us, we’re using regional cinema to go to them,” said Koch, adding: “This is the first

use of local cinema complexes to reach Australia’s regional small business community.”

‘Making Money Work’, the first of 10 events scheduled for 2010/2011, will be held at cinemas

from Harvey Bay to Mt Barker on Wednesday October 27. The 1.5 hour session will focus on

building profitable businesses in conjunction with personal wealth.

Julia Bickerstaff – a leading expert on small business profitability and the author of How to

Bake a Business will join Koch and a team of finance experts from Kochie’s Business

Builders to share tips on how to take control of business cash flows and improve profitability.

“The small business sector is the engine room of regional Australia’s economy and makes a

substantial contribution to export growth and the social cohesion of regional communities,”

said Koch.  “Our message to regional small businesses is that we’re going to be here to help

them over the long-term, and that these events are about helping them to take stock, to gear

their businesses for profitability and to beat the challenges they’re facing.”
