SUNCORP URGES CUSTOMERS TO BE WEATHER READY

8 FEBRUARY 2010: As steady rain and localised flooding continues across Brisbane suburbs and the Gold

Coast, the insurance company that insures for the Queensland way of life, Suncorp, is urging residents to

take reasonable precautions to ensure their homes are wet-weather ready.

Suncorp has already received a number of claims for home and motor vehicle damage from around the

region and, with the wet weather predicted to continue this week, Executive General Manager Personal

Insurance Claims Jason McCracken said there were simple steps residents could take to help minimise the

risk of damage.

“During extended periods of bad weather, we often see an increase in the number of home insurance

claims we receive.

“Residents can help protect their home from water inundation and damage in simple ways -

such as

removing leaves and debris from gutters, ensuring doors and windows are securely sealed, and bringing in

contents from the backyard.”

Mr McCracken also said the continuing rain highlighted the importance of residents having adequate

protection for their home and contents.

“However it is important for homeowners to ensure they take out adequate cover well before any

potential weather event, as you may miss out on the opportunity to be covered if you leave it until the last

minute when a storm is approaching,” he said.

Mr McCracken said Suncorp claims staff and assessors were ready to assist these weather affected

customers with claim lodgement and emergency repairs for eligible customers.

“The sooner customers lodge their insurance claims, the sooner we can start to assess damage and begin

any repair process,” Mr McCracken said.

Suncorp customers who have sustained damage to their home or motor vehicles should call us on our 24-

hour claims hotline 13 11 55 so we can assist them as soon as possible.

“Due to the wet weather we do anticipate a higher than usual volume of calls for assistance, so we ask that

customers please be patient when calling to lodge their claims.”
