CALTEX-MOBIL OPPOSITION A VICTORY FOR
MOTORISTS
Wednesday 2 December 2009: The ACCCs decision to oppose Caltexs bid to acquire
Mobils network of petrol stations on the eastern seaboard is a win for the motoring
public.
NRMA Motoring & Services President Wendy Machin said the
ACCC was
right to oppose
Caltexs proposal, which would have resulted in less competition.
The NRMA has worked hard to oppose Caltexs planned takeover of the Mobil petrol stations
because we have always believed that it would reduce competition.
The last thing the petrol industry in Australia needs is less competition.
The NRMA is calling on the ACCC to request stronger powers through the Trade Practices
Act to effectively monitor movements in the weekly price cycle.
If the ACCC has concerns about Section 50 of the Trade Practices Act, as outlined in its
statement, then it should go to the Federal Government and request the powers it needs, Ms
Machin said.
The Australian Government has previously said if the ACCC needed more powers all it would
have to do was ask.
