Famous Tasmanian Barilla Bay Oyster Farms for Sale - Industry Pioneers Retire
CAMBRIDGE, Sept 16/Medianet International-AsiaNet/ --
TASMANIA'S Barilla Bay Oyster Farms are up for sale after 30 years. The owners, Peter and Val Forrest,
are retiring after building up the business into a successful domestic and export operation. The Barilla Bay
brand is well known throughout the world for its premium oysters which appear on the menu of top
restaurants, at high-end seafood markets, and inspired the award-winning book House of Oysters featuring
recipes by celebrity A-list chefs.
On offer is the entire operation, including trademark brand, property and oyster leases, restaurant and
gourmet foodstore, processing facility, land and buildings. The oyster operation has earned a national and
international reputation because of its product's quality, superior taste and cleanliness, and consistency of
shell-shape. The Forrest family helped pioneer new methods of oyster farming, some of which are now
adopted as industry practice throughout Australia.
Peter Forrest says the decision to sell is "because we are in our 70s and it's time for us to slow down and
enjoy the fruits of our labour.
"Our family has built up the business from the ground, but it's time to stop and give someone else the
opportunity to take the business to the next level," Peter said.
The oyster farm is largely underutilized at 60% capacity because its aging owners chose lifestyle rather than
scaling up the business. The Barilla Bay brand has helped put Tasmania's fine food, aquaculture and
ecotourism industry on the world map - attracting some 40,000 local, national, and international visitors per
year. Many revel at dining on the freshly shucked oysters prepared a dozen ways; others are able to collect
their carefully packaged bounty on the way to the airport.
The operation provides up to 50 jobs, stocks around 7 million oysters, and its intertidal oyster racks, if placed
end to end, would run some 14kms. Currently the operation has the capacity to produce around 3 million
oysters per year, including splitting up to 18,000 per shift.
The farm to gate operation is for sale by negotiation as a going concern private treaty. Sales enquiries to
