MEDIA RELEASE PR36658
IEEE Japanese Members to Host Special Event Commemorating IEEE's 125th Anniversary
TOKYO, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ --
23 October 2009 Marks the One of Eight Celebrations Planned
Around the Globe
IEEE, the world's largest technical professional association, announced
today that the IEEE Japanese members will host the last of eight events
around the world celebrating IEEE's 125 years of Engineering the Future. The
event will take place in Tokyo, on 23 October 2009 from 17.30 to 21.00 JST at
Level XXI.
IEEE Japanese members, IEEE customers and technology leaders will join
together to celebrate the numerous accomplishments of IEEE members, the
technology professions and the association during the past 125 years and
provide perspective on the future of technology. IEEE's rich history includes
the founding of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers by early
industry giants, such as Thomas Alva Edison and Alexander Graham Bell; the
introduction of over 900 industry standards, including the Wi-Fi standard in
1997; and recognition of local contributions such as the Directive Short Wave
Antenna, the Yosami Radio Transmitting Station and the Development of Ferrite
Materials and their applications.
"We decided to celebrate our 125th anniversary in Tokyo due to the
tremendous contributions the IEEE Japanese members have made to IEEE and the
profession and the benefit of mankind," said 2009 IEEE president, John Vig.
"Thanks to the unparalleled efforts of our members in such places as Japan,
IEEE has made great strides during the past 125 years in fostering
technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. We look
forward to what is to come."
Invited guests will gather to listen to a roster of notable speakers,
including Dr. Mamoru Mohri, Chief Executive Director of the National Museum
of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), Astronaut. Discussions will
revolve around "Challenging the Unknown." The program will be followed by a
special invitation-only reception.
"We are honored that Dr. Mohri has accepted our invitation to speak and
believe he has something special and very individual to offer, considering
the great variety of emerging scientific fields his organization represents,"
said Dr. Toshiharu Aoki, Chair, IEEE Japan Council. "This program exemplifies
IEEE's leading authority on how science will help shape the future. We are
thrilled to have been chosen as one of the IEEE 125th anniversary event
destinations and strive to continue Japan's mission to become a technological
nucleus."
The global commemoration of IEEE's 125th Anniversary will continue
throughout 2009. In addition to the IEEE Japan event in Tokyo, Engineering
the Future events celebrating IEEE's 125th Anniversary will take or have
taken place in seven other technology hubs around the world, including
Austin, Texas, USA; Bangalore, India; Beijing, China; Boston, Mass., USA;
London, UK; Munich, Germany and San Jose, Calif., USA.
