The annual Malaysia Manufacturing Excellence Awards program heralds a fresh

avenue for Malaysia's manufacturing sector as companies get their capabilities

benchmarked and assessed to know their domestic and global competitiveness.

The Malaysia Manufacturing Excellence Awards (MMEA) is a part of the larger

Asia Manufacturing Excellence Awards (AMEA) program. With a mission to create an

annual opportunity for manufacturing establishments to put their manufacturing

capabilities on a health check, this awards program helps companies keep their

manufacturing capabilities lean, innovative and world class.

Frost & Sullivan has developed manufacturing competitiveness assessment model

based on extensive business tools evolved over the years. It judges manufacturing

establishment's maturity level on 12 important factors with over 240 check points

covered during the course of 2 to 3 days of on-site assessment.

The focus is on areas like internal competence, visual management, layout and

material handling systems, orderliness, safety and environment, operational

flexibility, process complexity amongst others with a maximum score of 1200

points. After assessment, a facility's score is analyzed and benchmarked against

peers in the same industry and local industry standards.

Among the 12 factors measured in the assessment, few factors emerge as a

common trait in all the seven recipients of MMEA 2008. The first is the

Orderliness factor, which not only demonstrates the cleanliness and neatness of

the factory, but also reveals the basic discipline and sense of ownership

displayed by the employees. Secondly, Safety and Environment aspect ensures that

these organizations take special care in ensuring safe working environment for

their people to enjoy. Industrial discharges are dealt with proper care and in

line with the standards set by environmental authorities. Third, Visual

management (KANBAN) has been effectively used by these organizations to yield

better results and internal competence has been given a lot of importance, to

deal with present and future challenges. Remarkable progress in lean

implementation was observed in these organizations.

Jay Chandran, Principal Consultant from Frost & Sullivan, who is leading this

program in the Asia Pacific region says, "Most of the companies we assessed did

not expect the thorough drill-down approach that Frost & Sullivan took. It was

very hard to please our assessment team, as we were looking beyond documental

proof and presentations. In fact, they were surprised at the in-depth coverage

and focus our team practised, instead of merely ticking points off on a check-

list.

"Common factors seen across companies such as honesty, acceptance of a

shortcoming, and willingness to change based on our clinical feedback are

commendable. With adequate support and investments Malaysian manufacturing

companies will fly high, consequently heightening Malaysia's full potential in

manufacturing and leveraging it against global standards," Jay added.
