Media Release – 24 June 2009

Australia’s Cardia Bioplastics® appoints

Muehlstein as distributor for the Americas

Australian based global supplier Cardia Bioplastics has appointed H Muehlstein & Co as distributor for its

portfolio of resins derived from sustainable resources for the Americas. Cardia Bioplastics is the new

international name for the Biograde Limited business.

Announced at NPE 2009 (National Plastics Exhibition) in Chicago, the agreement enables Muehlstein to offer

customers the comprehensive range of Cardia Bioplastics sustainable resins for packaging and plastic products.

Muehlstein represents international producers of plastic resin and is a leading distributor of polymers worldwide.

Muehlstein Vice President and General Manager Dave Skoczen said the Cardia Bioplastics range will provide “green”

polymer choices for customers. “As the ‘green space’ grows, we have looked for a supplier with a full palette of

sustainable options. The Cardia Bioplastics range provides customers with that choice,” he said.

“Depending on their specific product and sustainability needs, customers can choose from hybrid or fully compostable

resins. These materials can be converted with standard processing equipment for blow moulding, coating, extruding,

film, and injection moulding,” said Dave Skoczen.

Cardia Bioplastics Managing Director Dr Frank Glatz said the Muehlstein agreement completes the company’s global

distributor roll out. “We are delighted to have this partnership with Muehlstein, one of the largest distributors in the

largest market,” said Dr Frank Glatz.

“Growth for the sustainable resins market is driven by changing public attitudes and corresponding regulatory

requirements. Another driver for sustainable packaging is the growing certainty that ‘peak oil’ is coming closer.

Packaging and plastics businesses know that eventually higher oil prices will erode their competitiveness and their

profit margins, and they want packaging and plastic products solutions based on sustainable resources,” he said.

In recent months, Cardia Bioplastics has also appointed Marubeni Europe, Greener Works and F2DP Industries as

regional distributors in Europe, Unic Technologies in South East Asia, Orica Marplex in Australia and its own Biograde

business distributes in China.

Customer choice for sustainable solutions

Dr Frank Glatz said the new Cardia Bioplastics branding enabled the company to align its products more closely with

customers’ needs. “Our range delivers solutions across a range of sustainable resin technologies to offer each

customer a choice of solutions for their packaging or plastics product applications,” he said. The Cardia Bioplastics

range includes:

Cardia Biohybrid® resins These products are a blend of renewable thermoplastic materials and traditional

polyolefins. Hybrid resins allow manufacturers to embrace sustainable packaging early with existing equipment,

and enable them to immediately increase the renewable content of their products by up to 66% and reduce their

carbon footprint. This high performance range has a wide processing and application window and is colourable

and printable.

Cardia Compostable resins This range of fully biodegradable products meets international standards for

compostability, including Europe’s EN 13432, the USA’s ASTM D 6400, Japan’s GreenPla, Australia’s AS 4736.

These resins enable customers to offer fully compostable packaging and plastic products, with no additional

investment in existing production equipment. Derived from renewable resources, our resins are soft touch,

colourable and printable. We can develop compounds for specific customer needs and offer a base compostable

resin range.
