Road Safety For Albion Park Youth
20 October 2010
Albion Park High School will today receive a $1,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Road Safety Grant to help 800 Years 7 11 students be safer on the roads.
NRMA Deputy President Michael Tynan said the NRMA was proud to support road safety initiatives, which make a real difference at a local level.
"We are particularly pleased to present Albion Park High School with a $1,000 grant for teachers to further develop a ,,Safe Students Safe Roads' component into their Personal Development/Health/Physical Education, PDHPE, coursework," Mr Tynan said.
"These students are tomorrows drivers and exploring issues around road safety, peer pressure, alcohol and drug consumption will allow students to better understand the consequences of certain behaviours in preparation for their own driving experiences.
"The funding will go directly towards staff relief, new resources and teaching materials."
Albion Park High School Deputy Principal Jeff Hollingsworth said students would complete a unit of work based on the NRMA resource 'Shifting Gears'.
"Students will produce a multi-media health promotion resource about teenage driving, which will then be presented to the rest of the school community, thereby extending the road safety information to all students," Mr Hollingsworth said. "Thanks to the NRMA grant, we can get this message to a much wider audience.
"This work will make the whole Albion Park community safer and aligns directly with our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Commitment."
NRMAs Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for the hearing and visually impaired.
The NRMA also has a wide range of road safety fact sheets and information for younger drivers available at www.mynrma.com.au/roadsafety.
The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. For a list of this years successful applications visit www.mynrma.com.au/grants.
