Walkers Promotes Attorneys in Hong Kong Office
HONG KONG, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire-AsiaNet/ --
New partners named as firm receives series of industry awards
Leading international financial law firm Walkers is pleased to announce a number of promotions at its Hong Kong
office as demand for the firm's specialist offshore legal services and expertise grows in the region. These
promotions take place at an exciting time for Walkers, which has recently been the recipient of a series of major
industry awards, with particular success in Asia.
In Hong Kong, where Walkers has expanded significantly over the past two years, Arwel Lewis and Thomas
Granger have both been promoted to partners in Walkers' Investment Funds Group. The appointments of Mr.
Lewis and Mr. Granger were effective from 1 July 2010.
Mr. Lewis joined Walkers in January 2007, specialising in corporate work with an emphasis on private equity and
investment funds. Having originally trained with Linklaters, Mr. Lewis moved to Hong Kong in 2002 with a leading
international firm. His experience includes advising investment banks, financial institutions, investment managers
and private equity houses on downstream private equity investments, private equity fund formation, as well as all
aspects of Cayman Islands and BVI hedge fund structures.
Mr. Granger also specialises in investment funds and private equity work. Having joined Walkers in 2005, he
previously worked in the corporate department of Minter Ellison in Hong Kong and in Australia. Mr. Granger has
extensive knowledge of the Japanese hedge fund and private equity market and regularly advises clients on public
and private offerings in Japan.
Further to these moves, associates Ashley Davies and Fraser Hern have both been promoted to the position of
Counsel. These appointments were also effective from 1 July 2010.
Mr. Davies joined the Finance & Corporate Group in Walkers' Hong Kong office in 2008. He advises on Cayman
Islands and BVI law in relation to real estate finance, construction finance, structured and acquisition finance,
syndicated loans and general corporate matters. He joined Walkers from leading Australian firm Corrs Chambers
Westgarth and has also worked with international firms; Lovells, Dorsey &Whitney and Ashurst.
Mr. Hern joined Walkers' Hong Kong office in January 2009, focusing principally on corporate and financial
restructuring as well as contentious and non-contentious insolvency. Previously he was with Allen and Overy in
Hong Kong, specialising in restructuring and insolvency matters and Baker & McKenzie in London where he also
worked in investment banking.
"Walkers' success and growth has always been driven by the needs of our clients and these promotions in Hong
Kong are well deserved and demonstrate our major commitment to this region," commented Guy Locke, Managing
Partner of Walkers' Hong Kong office and Head of Asia. "As we continue to see an increasingly complex flow of
work into our major practice areas across our global network of offices it is imperative that we have the right
professionals in place. Asia has been a particular growth centre for Walkers in recent years and it is particularly
pleasing for us to be recognised there with some leading industry awards."
Recently, Walkers' Singapore office was named 'Offshore Law Firm of the Year' at the Asia Legal Business South
East Asia Awards 2010. The award was judged by a panel including partners from law firms and other service
providers. This was a notable success for Walkers' Singapore office which had been open for just 18-months prior
to that.
This award followed more success in Asia earlier this year when Walkers was named 'Offshore Law Firm of the
Year' at the IFLR Asia Awards 2010. Walkers was also recognised for its work on the US$2.5 billion Sands China
Ltd. IPO which was named 'Equity Deal of the Year' by IFLR Asia.
In addition to these leading industry recognitions, Walkers was recently named 'Offshore Law Firm of the Year
2010' by China Law & Practice magazine in the publication's fourth annual awards which showcase innovative and
high quality legal advice in the region's most complex transactions and cases. Additionally, three of the deals
Walkers advised on were named as 'Deals of the Year'. These were Sands China IPO - Equity, Carlyle Natural
Beauty - Private Equity and GNPower Mariveles Project - Project Finance.
