GM Canola Head and Shoulders Above the Rest
Geoff Mason, GM canola grower from Borowa, north of Canberra says the Pioneer Y620 hybrid he used has been his best crop since 2002. Even though the seeds were smaller than other varieties, it has produced a tall and vigorous crop. "I'm 6ft 2 and this crop reached my ears. It's really impressed me with its strength and potting depth."
One of the lucky growers who escaped the effects of the drought and frost conditions experienced by other growers this season, Mr Mason says the perfect conditions accelerated the growth of his GM canola crop.
"It's stems are as strong as tree trunks. I'm impressed with the way it stands up. It'd take a cyclone to blow it down."
Mr Mason says he will strip it for harvest around the second week of December.
"It's insured for 3 tonne per hectare. 2.6 tonne is the best we've ever grown in TT variety so I'm expecting to beat our marker this season. At this rate, I will definitely grow it again next year."
