MEDIA ADVISORY: World Congress of Accountants 2010 Kuala Lumpur 8 - 11 November 2010

    1.

INTRODUCTION  


    The World Congress of Accountants (WCOA), is jointly organised by the International Federation of

Accountants (IFAC) and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA). It will be held in Malaysia for the first

time from 8 to 11 November 2010.


    To date, there have been 17 such congresses held in various countries around the world such as in the

United States and European cities, with the last World Congress held in Istanbul, Turkey in 2006. Since 1904,

only two ASEAN capitals have organised the WCOA. They are Tokyo, Japan (1987) and Hong Kong in 2002.

Malaysia will go down in history as the third Asian country to host the WCOA.


    The World Congress, which is being held every four years since 2002, is the foremost international event for

the accountancy profession and a meeting of influential communities to share in the latest information,

innovative ideas and to exchange views on a platform of international and regional interests. 


    The World Congress, which will be held at the KUALA LUMPUR CONVENTION CENTRE, will be officially

opened on 8 November by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also the Malaysian

Finance Minister.


    With the theme "Accountants: Sustaining Value Creation", this year's meeting is expected to explore issues

related to key areas that directly and indirectly affect the continued relevance of professional accountants in

the coming years. 


    Over 150 renowned speakers will be discussing and debating on a wide range of topics and issues affecting

today's dynamic business landscape. Among the key issues to be discussed are the latest in financial and

business strategies, present and future trends in management and marketing, information communications

technology, trade and regulations issues, Islamic finance, accounting, ethics, governance and standards.


    There will be four plenary sessions and five concurrent sessions grouped into seven different spectrum of

interests to general and future Accountants. The WCOA 2010 plenary sessions will be delivered by eminent

and distinguished speakers in the following areas:


Plenary Session 1: Accountants: Sustaining Value Creation in the Borderless Economy

Plenary Session 2:  Islamic Finance: Strengthen the Global Financial Market

Plenary Session 3: Accounting for Sustainability: The Connected Reporting Framework 

Plenary Session 4: Accountants in the Next Decade - Embracing Change and Seizing Opportunities.


    Against this background, the World Congress is pleased to have forged a close working relationship with

Bank Negara to promote Islamic Finance at WCOA 2010. As an international Islamic Financial centre, Bank

Negara will be using the WCOA 2010 platform to offer our own unique perspectives on reviving faith in Islamic

Finance that will be insightful to all business and financial leaders as part of the global business value chain. 


    The World Congress has also managed to bring together the most influential and innovative minds in

business, finance, policy, and standard-setting from all over the globe, including distinguished speakers from

The World Bank, Transparency International, the Financial Stability Board, the European Commission, the

International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators, and the International Accounting Standards Board

among others.


    Among key personalities that will be speaking at the Conference are China's Vice Minister of Finance,

Wang Jun; Chairman of the International Public Interest Oversight Board, Mr. Stavros Thomadakis; Chairman

of the International Accounting Standards Board, Sir David Tweedie; Chairman of the International Valuation

Standards Council, Mr. Michel Prada; Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dato' Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz;

Securities Commission  Chairman Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar; Khazanah's Tan Sri Dato' Sri Azman Mokhtar, and

SME Corp  Malaysia CEO Dato' Hafsah Hashim.


    The main sponsors of the World Congress are heavyweights in their own right in the development of the

accountancy profession: the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of

Management Accountants (CIMA) and CPA Australia. 


    About the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC)

    The IFAC is a global organisation for the accountancy profession dedicated to serving the public interest by

strengthening the profession and contributing to the development of strong international economies.

It comprises 159 members and associates in 124 countries and jurisdictions, representing more than 2.5

million accountants in public practice, education, government service, industry and commerce.


    About the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA)

    The MIA is a statutory body established to regulate and develop the accountancy profession in Malaysia. 


    The MIA currently has over 26,000 members. It is also a member body of regional and international

professional bodies which play significant roles in the development and advancement of the accounting

profession globally.



    2.

ACCREDITATION

 

    Accreditation is required for journalists/photographers/broadcasters covering the event. Please apply for an

application form for accreditation to cover the meeting from BERNAMA Media Relations & Event Management

(MREM). See details below.  

 

    Each media organisation is requested to appoint a representative to coordinate accreditation and

accommodation arrangements for its team. Please duplicate the forms if more are required.

 

    Accreditation is available to representatives of recognised media organisations assigned to cover the

WCOA 2010. Media representatives should provide a letter of assignment endorsed by their respective

agency along with their application.


    Foreign media are requested to return their accreditation forms with two-passport size photographs directly

to the WCOA 2010 Media Secretariat at the address provided below.

    Malaysian and foreign media based in Kuala Lumpur should return their forms to BERNAMA MREM by 2

November 2010.

 

    Accreditation and information kits will be available at the Media Secretariat at KLCC. The Accreditation

badges must be worn at all times for access to technical session rooms. Media registration is for editors and

reporters only (working press). 


    Publishers, advertisers, sales representatives, editors or reporters from exhibiting companies; "in-house"

newsletters or promotional publications staff, public relations representatives of exhibitors or educational

institutions and other non-editorial representatives of publishing companies are not eligible to register as

"media."

MEDIA FACILITIES

    The International Media Centre (IMC) for the WCOA 2010 will be based at Room 301, 3rd Floor, Kuala

Lumpur Convention Centre.


    The IMC will provide adequate working space, communication facilities and other related media services to

meet the requirements of all accredited journalists, broadcasters and photographers. The IMC will begin

operating from 7 November and cease operations on 11 November. The operating hours are from 8.00 am -

8.00 pm.


    4.

ACCOMMODATION

 

    Media representatives will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and reservation of hotel

accommodation. Members of the media are requested to deal directly with their preferred hotels on the

number of rooms required, guest names, arrival and departure dates, rates and payment procedures. Please

    5.

MEDIA PROGRAMME

  

    A detailed media programme will be released closer to the WCOA 2010. It will also be provided at the

Media Secretariat Room. While the meetings are open to the media, the media will be advised on briefings

and press conferences to be held throughout the period.
