Barossa and McLaren Vale wine regions focus

of new education and compliance campaign

Premier wine-producing regions are the latest focus of the Fair Work Ombudsman

in South Australia.

Almost 100 wineries and vineyards will be randomly selected for audit.

A team of five Adelaide-based Fair Work inspectors will visit employers in the

week beginning Monday, November 15.

They will focus their attention on Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wine


The targeted education and compliance campaign is timed to avoid the industry’s

peak period at harvest.

It aims to educate employers ahead of the next vintage about their record-

keeping obligations and to ensure workers are paid correctly.

Fair Work Ombudsman Executive Director Michael Campbell says the prime

objective is to alert employers to their lawful responsibilities.

“For example, it is important that employers realise they must keep accurate time

and wage records and issue pay slips,” he said. 

A similar campaign in Western Australia’s Great Southern and South-West wine

regions last year found two thirds of employers to be compliant with workplace


Mr Campbell said it was encouraging that the WA businesses with contraventions

were receptive to the education and assistance provided by Fair Work inspectors

to help them voluntarily rectify their breaches. 

The Fair Work Ombudsman has a range of user-friendly resources on its website

at to assist employers comply with workplace laws,

including Modern Awards and minimum National Employment Standards.

Resources for small business include a number of industry specific web pages,

payslip and record-keeping templates, a self-audit checklist, template letters and

fact sheets on dozens of topics including leave, industrial action, public holidays,

enterprise bargaining, gender pay equality and family-friendly workplaces.

As well as Online resources, the Fair Work Ombudsman has advisers available to

speak with employers and workers with questions on its Fair Work Infoline on 13

13 94 from 8am-6pm weekdays.
