Ryans designer is a winner
Dandenong resident Ryan Scharenguivel has made a big splash in the design world, winning a
silver award at the prestigious Southern Cross Package Design Awards.
Ryan, 20, is completing his Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design at Chisholm Institute of TAFE,
and said he was delighted to get the Award.
Its really cool, said Ryan, The standard of entries was really high the one that won best of show
was amazing so to be up there with the winners is great.
Students taking part in the competition chose the type of package they wanted to design from a list
of categories that included pet food cartons, wine labels and beer packs. After some deliberation
Ryan chose to go for the Shrink Sleeve Wine Label category which required students to design a
wine label that would appeal to the 18-30 year old market, with strong brand identification and visual
appeal.
Ryans entry certainly met those criteria, combining a bold, black-and-white design with highly
detailed artwork and an unmissable brand name placement.
I work with pencil and paper, so I started doing a few trial sketches and built the idea up from
there, said Ryan, My teacher Linda suggested I do something a bit more related to the theme of
wine, so I started adding typically French things like grapes, the Eiffel tower and so on. The final
artwork took me two days.
Ryan was one of six students from Chisholm to be singled out by the judges for the excellence of
their entries. The other students included Sarah Moloney, Nicole Jones, Melanie Mackie, Jacqueline
Lin and Charles Lin.
Held at the Pit Lane Building in Albert Park, Melbourne, the Southern Cross Package Design
Awards are conducted by the Packaging Council of Australia and honour outstanding work in the
design field by tertiary design students nationwide.
The Awards are a great way for kids to get a feel of the kind of excitement and challenge that are
part and parcel of working in the design industry, said Gary Heath, Co-ordinator for the graphic
design course.
Gary co-ordinates Chisholms Industry Placement Program, and maintains close contact with a
wide variety of design departments and studios. He said that Ryan, Melanie and the rest of the
winners could soon be following in the footsteps of other graduates of Chisholms Advanced
Diploma and go on to work in some of Melbournes leading advertising and design agencies.
Theyve certainly had a great start, he said.
