Student animations bring mobiles to life

RMIT University student Sam Yang has struck gold with his first attempt at

designing fun animations for mobile phones, securing a distribution deal with a

mobile content company.

Mr Yang, of Doncaster, is one of several final-year Bachelor of Arts (Animation

and Interactive Media) students at RMIT who created quirky animated content as

part of an industry collaboration with Monikker.

Visitors to RMIT’s City campus on the University’s Open Day (Sunday, 10

August) can see some of the results of the project by having the animations sent

directly to their mobiles.

Mr Yang’s manga-influenced work so impressed Monikker, they immediately

began negotiations to buy the distribution rights and commission more of his

animations.

“Getting that foot in the door when you graduate can be tough, so to have work

commissioned before I even finish my course is fantastic,” he said.

Program Co-ordinator Mark Lycette said the project was initiated by Monikker,

who were looking for animated content designed by the same young

demographic that buy their products.

Mr Lycette said creating work for a mobile phone screen was a challenge, as the

size of the animations was limited to a tiny 25 kilobytes.

“Mobile phone animations are part of a new and booming market and our

students are learning how to adapt their work to this platform,” he said.

“Initially this project was about market research but the quality of the work our

students produced meant the company has not only sought to sign up Sam to

provide content, it’s also approaching several other students to commission their

animations.”

The animations can be seen on the website:
