Woolies Delivers Online Grocery Shopping to Townsville

Monday 1 February 2010: Townsville consumers are today able to log on and do their weekly shop as Woolworths becomes the first major supermarket to roll out online shopping to Northern Queensland.

The national chain is promising supermarket quality produce, cheap delivery charges and personal service all the way to the kitchen bench.

From today customers living in much of Northern and Far North Queensland will be able to log onto the new website Woolworths.com.au, search the supermarket aisles and place their order. Food deliveries will begin on Tuesday 2 February.

The retailer is promising a reliable, simple to use service with delivery prices cheaper than other full sized online grocery retailers. Gary Boyer, Queensland Regional Manager for Woolworths said, "Woolworths.com.au is a proven service that is a favourite for customers in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane so it's a pleasure to be able to bring our full sized supermarket to the desktops of shoppers in Townsville and surrounding areas."

Mr Boyer said that Woolworths.com.au had on average 3,000 specials online each week, that are identical in price to those in store, "With Woolworths.com.au featuring thousands of specials online as well as great delivery rates, I'm confident customers will recognise that online grocery shopping can be a fantastic alternative.

"Woolworths.com.au also goes the extra mile with delivery drivers more than happy to bring your shopping straight to your kitchen bench and it's a great solution if you're organising a function or large event."

When customers go online their orders will be sent to actual Woolworths stores in the region for dedicated staff to pick, pack and deliver. Mr Boyer added, "Woolworths' online customers can be confident their food is being picked and packed from the same shelves and aisles that customers browse through every day. Our dedicated team also has a mantra - if a certain product isn't of a high enough quality to be in their own trolley, they won't put it in yours. This ensures customers always get the best quality fresh food."

As an introductory offer Woolworths.com.au customers in Townsville can get free delivery for a six hour window, a reduced rate of $5 for a four hour window and $9 for a two hour window for a limited time a saving of up to $5. Woolworths.com.au shoppers will be able to use their Everyday Rewards cards, collect Qantas Frequent Flyer points and get their 4c off a litre petrol vouchers just like they can in stores.

Mr Boyer said experiences in other cities showed that online grocery shopping was a lifesaver for many people, "For busy familles who have trouble fitting in all the kids' activities as well as work, and for workers who never have enough time, Woolworths.com.au is a great way to avoid all the hassle of shopping."

"If our customers in Townsville and Northern Queensland haven't thought of taking a trip down the aisles of Woolies from the comfort of their own home, now's the time to try it out," said Mr Boyer.
