Expert comment on shipping container housing —

A plan for shipping containers to be used for cheap housing has been condemned

by social welfare groups.

Under the proposal, put forward by prominent urban planner Brian Haratsis, the

containers would be converted into houses and put on public land and in caravan

parks as alternative housing options for people on low incomes.

Could shipping containers help solve Australia’s housing affordability crisis?

How easy is it to convert a 12-metre steel box into a home?

What are social implications of housing poor people in shipping containers?

RMIT University’s Adjunct Professor Graeme Gunn is an expert in social issues

related to architecture, housing and urban design.

Dr Gunn is a former Dean of Architecture at RMIT and is available for comment on

housing affordability and the issues related to proposals for shipping containers to

be used as housing.
