AUSTRALIAS FIRST ONLINE BABYSHOP CELEBRATES 10 YEARS
Pioneering online shopping website Babyshop.com.au is celebrating a unique milestone in October as it
reaches 10 years of operation. After the birth of her first child Harrison in 1998, Alisa Crook needed an
option that would allow her to work and stay at home. Combining her newfound knowledge of baby
products with the internet she created an online retail baby store
Australias
first online baby store.
Sourcing products at first was a challenge, as many suppliers had limited knowledge of the internet, and
were reluctant to have their products offered for sale in that place. Alisa persevered and developed a
product range using a philosophy that is still applied to product selection today well known brands for
customer confidence partnered with new, exclusive and hard to find items.
The website was launched in 1998 during the infancy of online shopping in Australia, commencing the
same year as Google, Amazon UK and before EBAY Australia had begun. Babyshop began without loans,
or venture capital injections, enabling it to grow without pressure for a quick profit a key to surviving the
dot com boom/bust.
Babyshops early successes were confirmed when it was approached by many of the now major Australian
internet stores to either purchase Babyshops infrastructure, or to provide consultation services and advice
for establishing an online store.
We are proud of what Babyshop has achieved in our first ten years in the volatile online retail industry. We
are committed to further enhancing our customers online and traditional retail experiences and to continuing
our high level of customer service and satisfaction said Alisa.
Alisa had the foresight to register the telephone number 1800 BABIES and acquire the easy to remember
web address www.babyshop.com.au. Following a large growth in customers and products, and with room
at home limited, external premises became necessary and Babyshop opened their first retail store in 2003.
Babyshop stays ahead of its competitors by seeking out new products and improvements in technology.
The distribution of a regular specials newsletter via email, has proved popular with their repeat customers,
as well as attracting many new subscribers.
