PRESS RELEASE 14 October 2010
RETAIL WORKERS CONGRATULATE NSW
GOVERNMENT ON EASTER SUNDAY HOLIDAY
The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) is the voice of hundreds of thousands of
retail workers employed in the retail industry in NSW.
"Retail workers, their families and the community
congratulate the NSW Government on todays
announcement to declare Easter Sunday a public holiday which will further protect family and community
time" said SDA NSW Branch Secretary Gerard Dwyer. "It's an announcement that balances work, family
time and community interests."
"Since 1991 there has been a 17% increase in trading hours in NSW. Decisions like these help restore
some balance."
"When a young mum in Albury tells you she has spent the last 3 Easter Sundays working in a shop rather
than where she wants to be,
at home with her children,
and that she is tired of missing family and
community events, you know that a decision like this is needed. You know this decision is good for retail
workers, it is good for families, and it is good for the community."
"Declaring Easter Sunday a public holiday will achieve 3 things:
It will give retail workers a right to a 4 day break at Easter like other NSW workers, helping to
achieve some work/life balance;
It will fix a fair rate of pay for the day, so that those that work on this special day are properly
compensated;
It gives proper recognition to one of the significant days in the Australian community, a day
when families, faith groups and communities come together."
"Hundreds of thousands of retail workers, just like that mum in Albury, their families and the community
look forward to the NSW Parliament declaring Easter Sunday a public holiday" said Mr Dwyer.
